Monique Goldtsrom gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of sculpture
and photographs by Tova Beck-Friedman from September 27th to October 12th,
2002.
Opening reception September 28th , from 6:00 to 8:00PM
Titled ANDROMEDA, a large-scale three-element sculpture occupies the floor
space while photographic prints hang on the walls.
Tova Beck-Friedman’s sculptures are figuratively inspired, roughly surfaced
and austere. While her sculptures occupy a concrete site, her photographic
images are twice removed, once by the camera and then again by the digital
imaging process she employs. Interested in the psychology of memory she has
borrowed archetypal images from mythology, fusing figurative imagery with
architectural and archaeological forms as allegories open to contemporary
interpretations.
Art critic Margaret Sheffield states: "Beck-Friedman’s remarkable
work has always shown an acute perception of edge, both as silhouette and
surface. The subtle mixture of figural and abstract is an important part of
Beck-Friedman’s signature style, her works are dynamic interactions
between the viewer, the sculpture, architecture and nature". Sculpture
Magazine, Rhythm and Metaphor:Tova Beck-Friedman Summer ‘98.
In the catalogue published for her solo exhibition at the New Jersey State
Museum Zoltan Buki, then Curator of Fine Art, writes "Tova Beck-Friedman’s
twentieth century "monoliths" echo primitive sentiments. She asks
us to join her in the reverence of unknown deities and to commemorate events
that have not yet occurred. Her monuments are self-sufficient, as are all
works of art; they are also about ourselves. She gives shape to our desire
to celebrate our own spirit."
